The fear or obsession with death and dying is very real, and it is one of the leading phobias in the United States. Some people are so obsessed with death, that it obstructs their everyday life because they are afraid to do anything for fear of dying or some other tragedy. Everyone has some fear of dying, but it is usually minimal and can be controlled. Even people who have severe cases of the obsession can overcome it.
The things that people fear most about death are the unknown, the fear that they will go before they accomplish certain things in their life, or the fear that their loved ones won't be able to carry on without them. There are certain things that a person can do to get over their obsession.
Therapy is one way of getting over the obsession of death. The therapist will get to the root of the problem little by little until they find out what specific things makes a person so fearful. In many cases, they may even use simulators for treatment to simulate death to make the person go through certain experiences.
Some of these simulations may be lying in caskets, traveling at high speeds, or performing other risky simulations for experiences that could cause death if they were actually performed.
Another method to get over the fear would be to start doing things and living life to the fullest. Life only happens one time, and people need to experience all of things that they have been holding back on. Part of the reason why people have the fear of death is because they feel that they haven’t done enough in their life to be important to leave a legacy.
By performing these activities, they will lose part of the fear. Some of the things that people could do to feel like they have lived are to do things like skydiving, graduating from college, changing things about themselves that they dislike, or to do any other activity that they have always dreamed of doing. Travelling and seeing the world will also give people a sense of peace.
While people do not have to be holy rollers to get over their obsession, research has shown that getting spiritual in some way can help overcome the fear. It doesn't matter what religion, and you don't necessarily have to go to church if you don’t want to, just having a spiritual sense is enough.
This will help to alleviate your fears, and may even make you feel better in your everyday life. If you do get religion of some sort in your life, then you will also meet a lot of new people who are spiritual as well. These people can be a support system for the person who is obsessed.
Whatever route a person takes to get over their obsession, it is important to do something at all costs. Living life in fear deteriorates a person's quality of life and can put unwanted stress on them. If other alternative methods of getting over the fear do not work, then it may be time to consult with a physician.
