Gourmet Truffles - How to Make Them Yourself
By the look and taste of gourmet truffles, many believe that they are extremely hard to make on your own. This is a common misconception, however, since they are rather simple, and can be made by any amateur baker. All you need are a few simple ingredients, and you will be on your way to creating your own decadent chocolate truffles you and everyone around you will love.
The first and most obvious ingredient you will need is chocolate. You have a number of different options when choosing the chocolate that is right for you. The quality of the chocolate is extremely important as it will be the main ingredient in your truffles.
You have three basic options of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate. The decision all depends on what kind of taste you are looking for. Your chocolate will need to be chopped up into small places, and you should have around twelve ounces of chocolate; this will make up to about 26 truffles.
The next ingredient for your truffles is the cream, which will give your truffle the smoothness and creamy texture. Choosing the perfect amount of cream for your truffles is imperative, as having too much cream will cause your truffle to be much too soft. If you are going with 12 ounces of chocolate, then you will want to use no more than 1 cup of cream.
There are a few things you may add to your truffles to give them a different taste and texture. First on this list is butter. Butter will add your truffle with a little bit of flavor as well as creating the ganache for the center. Second on this list is extracts. Adding different extracts, for example vanilla, will give your chocolate truffle some added flavor as well. Liqueurs are also commonly used in changing the flavor of the truffles. Liqueur will give your truffle somewhat of a pinch or bite to it.
So you have all of the necessary ingredients, now what? First you need to chop up your chocolate if it wasn’t already done so. Chop them into the smallest pieces possible, to look like chocolate chips. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler with medium low heat, and stir in the cream. Keep stirring the mixture until the texture is nice and smooth.
Next you will want to add the butter. The butter will need to be whisked in with the chocolate until it is made into a ganache. After this is completed, add in and whisk any other flavors of your choosing.
After the whisking is completed, pour your ganache into a bowl and stick it into the refrigerator until it is firmed but not too hard. At that point, take the bowl out of the refrigerator and take out small amounts of chocolate, forming them into balls.
After this is completed, your truffles can be molded and coated with any flavor of your choosing. Keep them in an airtight container and eat them at the time of your choosing; they will last for a few weeks.
