Do you want to color your hair at home like a professional, or want to be able to experiment with different colors and different hues at your own pace? If so, we strongly insist you to read the entire page.
Coloring your hair at home is always great. But it's not an ideal option for many of us because it's difficult. If you don't have the patience, we highly recommend that you visit a salon.
Coloring your hair is an art just like make up. It takes time. You need to be patient if you're looking for the best results possible.
With that said, here's how to color your hair at home like a professional:
1. Choose the right hair color type
There are three different types of hair colors available in the market for different purposes - semi permanent, demi-permanent and permanent hair color.
If you're interested in covering your gray hair or want to switch to a new hair color on a more long-term basis, permanent hair color products are your best choice.
On the other hand, if you're just interested in changing your hair color on a temporal basis or would like to try out a new layer of color on your existing hair, you can do well with a semi or demi-permanent hair coloring products.
Semi-Permanent hair coloring products last about 5 - 10 shampoo washes whereas demi-permanent hair coloring products can last up to 30 washes.
But there are ways to prevent your hair color from fading and make them last longer as well. It involves the use of Shampoos that offer UV protection, conditioners and color extending shampoos.
2. Choose the right color
Have you already picked the hair color that you'd like to try out? Or do you feel overwhelmed by the various color options you have and are struggling to choose one? If so, you're not alone.
There are many women who go through the same tiring experience. It's just impossible to figure out which hair color suits you the most (especially if you’ve been dying your hair for a really long time).
The perfect hair color for you would be a factor of your eye color and your skin tone. Have a clear look at your hair and see how it really looks like in broad daylight. This will give you an idea of your true hair color and based on that, you can choose one that works for you.
When it comes to colors, here's what we recommend:
1. Dark complexion with dark eye colors
If you have brown or black colored eyes and have dark or brown skin, the best hair color for you would be something light such as red, gold, etc as it creates a sharp contrasting picture that makes you stand out. Try to avoid colors such as blue, black, brown, etc as they won't look good on you.
2. Fair complexion with blue/green colored eyes
If you have blue or green colored eyes and fair skin, the best hair color for you would be something dark such as jet black, brown, blue and other color variations. Colors such as red, yellow or golden won't really suit you that well.
Another effective way of finding out what kind of color works best for you is to make use of technology. Use the computer and the internet to take a picture of yourself and experiment with different colors. There are some hair color websites on the internet that allow you to upload your picture and experiment with different colors. Try these sites.
Alternatively, if you have a role model or a supermodel whose skin tone is quite similar to yours, you can model their colors and style.
3. Trying out highlights
Highlights can really enhance your look if done the right way. But we strongly suggest that you do not try highlights at your home if you've already colored your hair before. You’ll only be left with imperfect results that make little or no difference at all. If your hair has never been dyed before i.e. virgin hair, we strongly encourage you to try highlights.
4. Coloring gray hair
If you have gray hair due to aging or any other reason, you'll find that it is extremely difficult to color when you're doing it on your own. It's because the hair isn't gray at all in the first place. It's just that the hair has lost its pigment (your original hair color).
The gray color is just a function of light. The hair absorbs light and just reflects it back. The gray or white is not an inherent quality of your hair.
Fortunately, there are products specifically designed for coloring gray hair which you can use. We also recommend certain exclusive shampoos and conditioners that can help you battle gray hair better.
5. Application of hair color
Depending on the thickness and the length of your hair, you may need multiple boxes of hair color. If you have really short hair, you can do well with just one box of hair color. But if your hair's long and incredibly thick, we recommend at least two or more boxes of hair color.
The most important thing that matters when you're coloring your hair at home is your time. In order to get professional results, you need to give time.
Professionals at the salon can color your hair in a short time-frame because they've mastered the skill. Since you're relatively inexperienced when it comes to coloring your hair on your own, you can be sure that it's going to take time.
Make sure that you give yourself at least 2 - 6 hours time (ideally on a weekend) to apply color. Speeding up the process will actually result in an imperfect bond that will go away with time.
Read the instructions of the hair color you purchased thoroughly. The method of application and preparation may vary depending on the brand of hair color you've chosen. Start with applying your hairs on your roots and then slowly distribute to your ends without over coloring any area.
6. Keeping your hair color vibrant
This is critical. Your hair color is going to fade away no matter what. Regardless of whether you use semi permanent, demi permanent or permanent color type, it will fade with time. Fortunately, there are products that can extend the life of the color by effectively acting as a shield.
Some products we recommend are hair color extenders, gloss products and conditioners. Hair glossing products help keep your hair color vibrant and make it appear silky smooth. We encourage you to try that.
