The act defines disabled as anyone with a physical or mental impairment which has substantial and long-term adverse effects on a person's ability to perform day-to-day tasks. So if no matter what your disability is your needs have to be catered for.
The general problem with this is people in wheelchairs as they have to have access to everyday goods and services just like the general public. This means that there should be a ramp for wheelchair users to enter a building if there are steps and if there isn't a ramp then there needs to be a safe alternative.
This means some institutions do have to have a stairlift installed in their building so that individuals in wheelchairs or people with mobility problems can access different parts of the building. If they do not have a stairlift then they must provide an actual lift otherwise it can be classed as discrimination. This is the same with public transport who have to provide lifts onto platforms and as well as this they have to provide ramps on to transport like buses and trains.
The changes a business has to make have to be reasonable and affordable for the business as it can become unfair on some people. For a small business installing a small ramp may cost them £1000 which they cannot afford and this is acceptable however for a large supermarket like your local Sainsbury's they have to provide a ramp as it is affordable to them. It is important to remember want is affordable for a large business may not be for a small er business and this is why it is include in the act.
Blind people often face discrimination because they require assistance when walking around from a guide dog. These guide dogs go everywhere with the person and this used to cause problems. Some buildings like shopping centres banned all dogs but thanks to the discrimination act guide dogs are allowed anywhere that he general public is allowed so that blind people are not limited to where they can go.
In addition to this if a blind person uses a taxi and takes the guide dog with them then the taxi cannot charge extra for the guide dog as they would for any other dog. This was the case with one woman who was being charge an extra £2.50 for each ride with her guide dog but once she appealed against this she was given compensation.
Landlords are also required to make certain adjustments to their properties for potential tenants so disabled people are not left at a disadvantage. Landlords are not allowed to charge more if to a disabled person although they are allowed to hold back some of your deposit if something is damaged because of your disability like the floor being damaged by a wheelchair.
Landlords also have to provide aids when asked to make life easier for the disabled person. These aids can include ramps, a tenancy agreement in braille, accessible door handles and much more.
There are many rights that you hold as a disabled person but you should bear in mind whether it is reasonable to ask a small business to make changes because the law may not require them to make these changes. Other than that you should be able to perform your day-to-day roles easier with the assistance of the disability discrimination act.
