The Chinese Tea Ceremony

The Chinese tea ceremony is only a little different from the Japanese one, but the two different cultures and countries of Asia are united on one point and that is tea is to be respected and delighted in its indulgence of. The tea ceremony is nothing like us brewing a cuppa in the kitchen. They have special techniques, equipment, and dress and even accompanied to music.

The atmosphere is created to relax and socialise in a special tea house, it is also usually prepared and served by a Geisha. These can be either men or women these days and are not to be mixed up with prostitutes. The original Geisha was there to entertain, tell stories, jokes, dance and make tea called Saki. A quick way to tell the difference between an original geisha and a prostitute is the Obi and how it is tied. Prostitutes tie at the front so it can be re-tied quickly. A tea Geisha has them tied in the back by someone how has helped them dress.

There are three different types of tea cup used in the Chinese tea ceremony, these are in integral part of the culture in China and also Japan. The lidded cup called a Gaibei. The wen xiang bei for smelling the fragrance. The cha bei which is the one used for drinking from. They also drink from a bowl called a chawan. The two main types of earthenware use to make the actual teapot is red clay from TeoChew and purple clay called Yixing.

Many times in the past the demand for Chinese porcelain could not be met because of wars or European accelerated demand. Many cups and tea ceremony vessels are very highly sought after and can be antiques by many centuries. These old teapots and cups are ergonomic and light; today they are the classic oriental flavour of tradition.

The Chinese tea gardens can to be found in southern and central china. All teas come from the Camellia Sinensis plant. These teas are rich in antioxidants which are important for the health of our bodies. They are also shown to fight anti aging. The antioxidants are able to neutralise free radicals that are found in carcinogens. Carcinogens are found in rich processed foods like high fat, BBQ, smoked food and people who smoke.

These cause cancer and with drinking tea the risk of heart disease is also minimised. The minerals found in tea are not destroyed by hot water and the leaves have 10 types of elements which are useful for our bodies. Green tea has the most elements compared to other types of tea. The vitamin C in green tea is similar to a thin slice of lemon!

There are many health benefits of tea, the public are aware of the types of tea available including peppermint tea and chamomile tea.
